Music Meme

Lovely Persephone who hangs out at: postitnotesfromhades.blogspot.com, and with whom I have regular Dr Who discussions on other people's blogs has just tagged me for this music meme...

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.

Well, music as I've mentioned before plays a big part in my creative processes, and I'm currently dabbling round the edges of book 3 before diving in. So my first choice is an incredibly cheesy and most unspringlike Last Christmas by Wham, as a) it's the title of the book and b) I am trying to get myself sufficiently Christmassy to write about it in the summer. Bloody hard I can tell you...

Next is The Hills are Alive from The Sound of Music, which we saw last week. Emily, the heroine of Strictly Love is a fan, and I nearly came a cropper having another character quote from it. (I shall be blogging about our trip over at the Other Place)

Thirdly, well... not exactly the sound of my springtime, but more like part of the soundtrack of my life, which Terry Wogan played first thing this morning. Another cheesy one, but it was the song Spouse first asked me to dance to, far too many years ago to care to contemplate. I had pitched up very late to an end of term disco, and was in blissful and ignorant conversation with him, not realising his friend was poking him in the back, saying, Go on, ask her to dance... Had we known then that here we'd be over twenty years later with four children, I think we might both have run a mile...

Anyway it's Drive by the Cars. Check out that mullet... Weren't the eighties fab?

Fourth, is Behind Blue Eyes by the Who. We've managed to watch and video the same documentary on them twice in the last couple of weeks, and this song always makes me weep.

Fifth is a song for the new book. I wasn't a fan of the BeeGees and disco in the seventies, but nostalgia is a wonderful thing and they've grown on me. And it wasn't till I heard this song, that I realised just what a talented bunch they were. This is Where I Come In is from the album of the same name, which is the last they made before Maurice's untimely death. I love it, and it's perfect background for the mood of this book...

Sixth, thanks to Persephone I found this by the Mumm-Ras which was driving me mad...It's called She's Got You High and is the perfect song for describing falling in love. So here are the Martha and Doctor again (any excuse to show pictures of David Tennant on this blog I can tell you...)

And finally. My musical tastes are not my own anymore. Thanks to the children I get to hear all sorts of things I wouldn't otherwise. I absolutely LOVE Mercy by Duffy....

Oh and the other part of the meme is that I have to tag people, so....and apologies for not doing the links properly. Still have trouble with that, and at the minute I don't QUITE have time to do it properly. So... Here goes, I tag, Liz Fenwick, Nic, Expatmum, Dulwichmum, Amy Appleton, Rivergirlie and Mad Twin (I know you don't have a blog MT, but you can leave your comments here... instead)

It is an interesting exercise, isn't it? This came through from Lisa at "Rullensberg Rules" to Rob at "Eine Kleine Nichtmusik" to me.
"Behind Blue Eyes" has rather a chilling reference for me. Someone related to my husband loathes me (has never said why) and this song is my warped way of trying to feel some compassion for him: "...my dreams aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be...."
Not living in England, I'd never seen that hysterical promo for How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria. What a hoot!
Will answer your kind email in due course...

Gosh this will take some thinking. I used to have music on all the time but we have such a complicated system now that I don't have time to figure it out! Will think and post about it.
Thanks.

well, i accept! i'm very very poor at completing memes, tho, cos nothing brings crashing home how amazingly dull i am like having to write interesting things about myself (there are none - except the toast phobia that everyone no knows about). actually, i owe one to ben locker, so maybe i'll do them together.
how did you get all those utube things to appear on one page? i can't bloody do it!

Persephone, give me any excuse to provide a soundtrack and I'll take it!!! Sorry about the chilling BBE ref though... I love that song because it makes me think the singer is really sad and lonely and it's got the emotional catch I always go for in songs I use when I'm writing. So the lyrics, probably ain't quite right, but the feelings it inspires are probably perfect for one of my current heroes...
I've just tried to look for the promo for I'd Do Anything which has just finished, which features Nancys ripping off each other's lockets. It's the first time we've watched one of these series and it was horribly compuslive...

expatmum I always think these things are just a bit of fun, really. Hope I haven't given you too much of a headache!!

Rivergirlie. I like music memes (not that I've done many memes...) because you don't have to be interesting just say what music you like. Don't know if you can do it on wordpress, but I copy the embedded stuff from the You Tube video and just paste in using html version of the blog. Which seems to work... I did try posting straight from You Tube and never got anywhere!

Oh God it's like High Fidelity when Rob finally gets asked what his top 5 are and can't decide.

I like most of your selection, not too keen on the Cars, SoM is alright if you're in the mood, the High one is OK, but Wham are wonderful Wham; The Who,well they're always fabulous; the Bee Gees are just brilliant (had hits in the 60's,
70's 80's and 90's) & love Mercy by Duffy.

I am not a wild music fan, (best poems would be better)but here are some of my favourites....I'm only attaching two videos and saving them for last, cos, well they're both corkers.

So in no particular order:

Norwegian Wood, The Beatles.
There are so many to choose from, but this is one from around the time they stopped being pretty boys and started telling interesting stories. Love the music, love the clever lyrics, the idea of a young man being treated like dirt by a girl, the slightly sardonic tone. Wonderful.

Run,Baby,Run by Sheryl Crow. I love tousled female singer/songwriters and they don't come much better than this. Added to the fact I like a clever lyric "She was born in November the day Aldous Huxley died.." (also the day of JFK's death, but she doesn't sing it) & a great tune.

Beautiful - Christina Agueilara. I forgive her all the crap for this. Wonderful lyrics again "you're a beautiful, no matter what they say" & for daring to have people who aren't physically beautiful on the video as she sings it.

Get into the Groove - Madonna. So many songs too choose from, but I love this cos it reminds me of when I was young and went out dancing.

Desperado The Eagles for personal reasons. It's great though.

"Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps" Doris Day which must be seen with this scene from "Strictly Ballroom" Sexy Dancing, humour and real sadness. Fantastic!

And finally, this has to be my all time favourite
"Hurt" by the late, great and much lamented Johnny Cash. For years I'd pegged Johnny Cash as some old country & western hasbeen. Till I saw this, his last video. Talk about memento mori. He sings it beautifully, with real pain, a plea for forgiveness of the many hurts he inflicted in the past, a recognition of the physical hurt he and his wife June were going through near the end of their lives, and an acknowledgement of the unimportance of all their wealth and fame. It's really wonderful and always always makes me cry.

Hope that'll do. I'll probably think of some more tomorrow!

Forgive me, wasn't quite reading properly, this was supposed to be my songs for spring, rather than my favourite....

Trouble is I don't really have seven songs at the minute (I don't really listen to music much) so those will have to do. The Johnny Cash one is always there at the back of my mind though, and we saw a repeated documentary about him the other day, so I guess I am not quite cheating there.

MT

PS Sorry about not working out how to do tags properly. I am crap at IT, middle child completely outclasses me
